Es ist eine große Geschichte, die mit einem kleinen Einfall begonnen hat. 1908 wurde beim Kaiserlichen Patentamt in Berlin ein Gebrauchsmuster angemeldet, das in mehrfacher Hinsicht bedeutsam war und ist: Zum einen gehörte die Anmelderin zu den ersten Frauen, die ihre eigenen Erfindungen schützen ließen. Zum anderen war diese Erfindung so erfolgreich, dass sie bis heute praktisch in keinem Haushalt fehlt und zur Gründung eines Unternehmens führte, das bis heute besteht. Eingereicht wurde das Patent von Amalie Auguste Melitta Bentz geb. Liebscher, nachdem sie einige Experimente durchgeführt hat, um eine klare und geschmackvolle Tasse Kaffee zuzubereiten. Denn der Kaffeesatz und der bittere Geschmack der herkömmlichen Brauweise sagten ihr überhaupt nicht zu. Und so erfand sie den Kaffeefilter und nannte ihn nach ihrem Drittnamen: Mellita.
