23 - How to Read a Label

On this episode of Toni Unleashed the podcast Toni and Emily are talking about something fairly controversial. That is starting to understand how to read your dog's food label, what to look out for, and a deeper dive into some scarier ingredients that are actually allowed in your dog's food.   Emily and Toni talk about what should be your first couple of ingredients, meat should always be listed as the first ingredient, in fact the first three ingredients should be meat unless it is a single sourced protein diet. This excludes the words: Animal protein, protein, meat. You want the meat content to be strictly identified as an animal source. Secondly, Toni and Emily talk about ingredients that they recommend avoiding that are really common in commercial diets: Contain wheat, corn, soy, chemical preservatives and food coloring, animal digest, and what meat meal really is. Finally Toni and Emily talk about all the chemicals that are commonly found in commercial dog food outside of just the ingredient panel. BHT, BHA, Ethoxyquin. Toni talks about how common these chemicals used to be in dog foods, and how they are linked to cancer in people and animals.
