231: Why Belle Baker Wants All Women To Know How To Drive A Tractor

from Motherland Australia · host Stephanie Trethewey

Belle Baker grew up on a property in the South-East of South Australia. She loved working with the cattle and sheep and dreamed of a career on the land. But when the time came for her to decide what she was going to do with her life, her dad told her to go and get a real job, because the farm wasn’t going to be an option for her. After years of travel overseas, and studying in Sydney, Belle returned to South Australia. In her mid 30s, she became a mum and a single parent to her son at the same time. After leaving an abusive relationship, she found shelter at her parents' property. When her dad got very sick in 2015, Belle (ironically) after all those years, found herself running the farm. She’d rarely driven the tractor, and it was a difficult model for her to learn to use.  When it came time to buy a new one, Belle was in for a rude shock when it came to the decision making. This is where Tractoring For Women was born. Belle is a remarkable woman, and her story is one you need to hear. A warning, it touches on domestic violence so if you or someone you know needs help, call 1800 RESPECT.Our winter podcast sponsors CABLE have just launched the first drops of their exciting Spring Collection, introducing pieces that will be the foundations of your trans-seasonal wardrobe.
