晋朝太元年间，武陵一个渔夫,偶然的机会，穿过桃林的尽头的一座山的山洞。发现了世外桃源,里面无论男女老幼,都怡然自乐，没有世间的纷扰与战乱,他们自称祖先是躲避秦朝的战乱而来此地,就再也没出去过了。渔夫在桃源住了几天就离开了，并沿途做了记号，告知当地太守。但无论是太守派的人，还是后来像南阳刘子骥那样的名士，想再次寻求这个世外桃源,却再也找不到了，再后来,就再也没人去寻找这个世外桃源了。
