23andMe bankruptcy a sad story

from Techstination · host Fred Fishkin

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin.     Have to admit there is some sadness around here at the bankruptcy of pioneering home genetic testing company 23 and Me.    It has been nearly 20 years since the company’s founding….and it unlocked so much information about health and heritage…getting many folks interested in genealogy and perhaps improving medical outcomes too.  But what it couldn’t do was continue to attract new customers….and without recurring revenues…a fancy word for subscriptions…the business model didn’t hold up.  Ancestry.com…which became a DNA testing competitor, has long been a leader in the genealogy space using a subscription model.    Meanwhile… California’s Attorney General has reminded consumers of their right to delete their genetic data from 23andMe if they choose. You can find us at Techstination.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
