This is why the body and the soul of all of creations were created simultaneously, through one utterance of G-d. For example, when G-d said, “Let the earth give forth living animals,” the earth gave forth a living animal. It is only concerning the human that G-d had changed the format. G-d separately formed the body out of earth and then separately blew the soul of life into the body. The “Orach Chaim HaKodosh,” explains that man was also created as a living person, and the soul that G-d later blew into his nostrils was the Nefesh HaSicli, the Intellectual Soul. In the teachings of Chassidus we would define this as Adam originally being created with his Animalistic Soul, the life-force of the cells and organs of the body, including the brain as it serves as the life-center, nerve-center, and the motor to the body. Then G-d breathed into mankind a piece of Himself, a piece of G-d, which is the G-dly Soul. Actually, until this very day it works the same way. The Animalistic Soul is the soul that the child is born with, while the G-dly Soul enters into the person in stages, and is completely within the child for a boy at the age of 13 and for a girl at the age of 12. This is why the sages say that the Animalistic Soul, which is the drive of the egocentric Evil Inclination says to the G-dly Soul, which is the drive of the selfless Good Inclination, “My contract [of submission of the person] is [dated] first!” The outcome of the human having an infinite celestial soul and a finite terrestrial body is what the sages describe as, “With three ways man is compared to an angel, and with three ways to an angel.” The practical issue that this creates within the person is the Infinite Struggle. The finite human has infinite aspirations. The human is the only living creature on earth that has an innate need to create an eternal legacy, which defies the grave in which his finite body shall be put to rest. The human being is the only creature that is plagued with a feeling of futility, which most often surfaces in full blossom in what we call a midlife crises. At the heart of this is the human’s being incapable of finding purpose and fulfillment in the Animal Kingdom’s life of, Eat, Don’t be eaten and Procreate. The soul of the human is infinite and eternal, and wants to express this in its finite experience here on earth. In this lecture we are going to explore how to fulfill our innate irrepressible need to create an infinite eternal legacy.
