The landslide, already surpassing the 1963 Vajont Dam disaster in size, is a rotational landslide caused by a geological trap of sand and clay beneath the town. The situation is critical, with hundreds of homes in the danger zone and the landslide continuing to creep towards the town centre.The Italian government is providing financial support to Nashmi residents affected by the landslide, including tax and mortgage payment suspensions. An investigation is underway to determine why no action was taken after a similar landslide in 1997. The risk area has been extended to 25 square kilometres, with a complete ban on construction, and residents in the red zone can only access their homes with firefighter escorts.
