25 | Anxiety Exposed: Understanding Its Tactics and Taking Back Control

from Burnout to Thriving · host Cecilia Mannella

Hello, Mental Makeover community! It's your host, Cecilia Mannella, back with another episode that's all about unpacking the complexities of anxiety. Today, we're not just talking about anxiety disorders, but the everyday anxiety that seems to have become a prevalent part of our lives, especially in the past five years. Anxiety is like an alarm system in our bodies, warning us of potential dangers. However, when this alarm goes off without a real threat, it becomes problematic, leading to what we know as an anxiety disorder. But not all anxiety is pathological; it's a natural part of our human experience. In this episode, I've broken down five habits of anxiety that can help you understand its patterns and, ultimately, take back control: Anxiety as a Mind Reader: Anxiety often convinces us that we can read others' minds, leading us to believe they're thinking negatively about us. But in reality, most people are too preoccupied with their own lives to give us much thought. Anxiety as a Fortune Teller: It loves to predict the worst outcomes for our future, but it's important to remember that anxiety is a terrible predictor and usually gets it wrong. Anxiety as a Record Keeper: Anxiety keeps a biased record of our lives, focusing only on our mistakes and failures, and ignoring our successes and moments of joy. Anxiety as a Bully: It teams up with perfectionism and criticism to push us around and set unrealistic standards, which constantly change to keep us feeling inadequate. Anxiety as a Word Master: It uses "should" statements to impose guilt and shame, which can lead to withdrawal and isolation, where anxiety thrives. To combat these habits, I encourage you to ground yourself in your values and beliefs, consult your inner wise voice, and seek connection with others. Remember, anxiety grows in isolation, but it shrinks in the light of connection and community. I'd love it if you shared this episode with anyone who might benefit from understanding their relationship with anxiety better. Stay connected, laugh at anxiety's attempts to control you, and remember who you are at your core. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Mental Makeover Radio. Until next time!
