25. From police detective to public speaker to help more people with Narelle Fraser

from Courageous Me · host Kim Payne

"I still think it's the best career in the world. It's a window to life."   In this episode, we dive into the life of Narelle Fraser, who gives us a fascinating, behind-the-scenes insight into the daily life of a Police Officer from a female perspective. Narelle was a member of Victoria Police for 27 years, 15 of those as a Detective 'doing time' at the Rape and Homicide Squads and Missing Persons Unit but dedicating much of her career to investigating child abuse and sex offences.  Narelle shares some of the harrowing stories of her time as a cop that will make you laugh, cry, and shake your head in disbelief and amazement. What's remarkable is her persistence, no matter how hard things got, driven by her lifelong passion to help people. In 2012, Narelle realised that her world was starting to crumble. A diagnosis she wasn't expecting turned everything she knew and loved upside down. It took courage and determination to accept and face her vulnerabilities – but out of that adversity came a new career path and opportunities that enabled her to continue her passion for helping people.  Narelle's journey will make you think deeply about your vulnerabilities & strengths.  **Please note the trigger warning at the beginning of the episode which is important to hear before tuning in. **   What you'll learn: When a lifelong passion to help people outweighs everything else.  The repercussions of suppressing your emotions.  Holding someone's hand can provide comfort and strength.  Everyone has a limit, and no one is immune.  The danger of ignoring the signs and stigma around mental health. Overcoming fear to become a public speaker at age 55 to continue helping people.
