Due to the nature of the current conflict in Afghanistan, and the ongoing hostage crisis, the Taliban occupies a strong bargaining position. Simply put, they have the leverage in any negotiations because they understand the US' bottom line, evacuating American citizens and green card holders. Meanwhile, the Taliban has no bottom line, no time limit, and all of the bargaining chips.
