263 - Recovery Is Hard: When Getting Sober Doesn't Fix Everything
from The Recovery Couch Hosted by BrandonCouch10
Getting sober doesn't automatically repair everything addiction destroyed. In this raw solo episode of The Recovery Couch, Brandon Couch opens up about one of the hardest realities of addiction recovery: learning to forgive yourself while still accepting the consequences of the person you became during active addiction. After nearly two years of sobriety, Brandon finds himself wrestling with recovery burnout, regret, broken family relationships, childhood trauma, faith, and an uncomfortable question: What happens when you do the work of recovery, but the life you lost doesn't come back? Brandon reflects on the false hope he gave his wife during active addiction, the wounds that influenced his destructive behavior, and the difficult balance between understanding why you became who you were and taking responsibility for what you did. He also talks candidly about feeling mentally exhausted, questioning his future as an author and podcaster, and ultimately deciding that his story isn't finished. This episode explores: Addiction recovery and long-term sobriety Recovery burnout and emotional exhaustion Forgiving yourself after addiction Accepting the consequences of addiction Childhood trauma and unresolved wounds Rebuilding family relationships after addiction Faith and finding purpose in recovery Regret, accountability, and making amends Finding the strength to keep going when recovery gets hard Recovery isn't always a story about getting everything back. Sometimes it's learning to accept what you cannot change, finding the courage to change what you can, and continuing to build a life worth living.
