27. FAMILY DINNER (2022) dir. Peter Hengl

from The Movies · host Daniel Berrios

As I type, writer/director Peter Hengl's debut horror film, "Family Dinner," premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. It's a horror film about 15-year-old Simi (Nina Katlein in a tour-de-force debut performance), who travels to her nutritionist aunt Claudia's (Pia Hierzegger) for Easter weekend in hope she'll help Simi lose weight. Soon, Simi is isolated in Claudia's forest home, with nothing to look at but trees, her misogynist cousin Fillip (Alexander Sladek) and Claudia's post-divorce lover Stefan (Michael Pink). At first, Claudia's infantilizing relationship with Fillip and her devoted set of dietary rules just seems par for the course for someone whose life's devoted to maintaining their health at peak performance, but as the days progress, Simi uncovers a more sinister, disturbing side to her aunt.---Follow The Movies on Instagram & LetterboxdFinancially support the podcast via the tip jar!
