#275: Overcoming Childhood Sibling Sexual Abuse with Jane Epstein

from Own Your Choices Own Your Life

Today we are speaking with Advocate and Author, Jane Epstein. Jane is an advocate, educator, and sibling sexual abuse survivor. She educates public about the prevalence of child-on-child sexual abuse so parents understand why it is important we have body safety discussions with our children. Jane speaks publicly about the taboo subject of SSA (Sibling Sexual Abuse) and the devastating effects left behind for entire families. Jane spent 40 years in a continual state of dissociation, she was in and out of therapy, and despite marrying and being blessed with two children, she became depressed and suicidal. Sobriety and self-reflection led her to write her story, and that is where she encountered the answers. As she began, she googled "sibling sexual abuse," only to find one or two outdated sites, leading her to believe she was alone. In this episode we discuss: 1) What happens when we disassociate from our emotions, pain and trauma and how that can lead to so many other emotional and physical responses in our bodies. Even though these mechanisms are how we cope for the time being, it is never a long term solution. 2) The ongoing traumas and challenges that she experienced and how she had to break the patterns and turn to her faith to help her deal with her traumas. 3) The importance of forgiveness and how it can be healing in all areas of our lives. Forgiveness became such a beautiful gift to herself and that it overflowed into other areas of her life.
