He grew up in New Jersey and attended Bergen Catholic High School, where he was named Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2000. He went on to attend the University of Virginia, where he played for 3 seasons before leaving school early to turn professional. At UVA, he was a 3 time All-American and was the recipient of the Hermann Trophy, given to the best college soccer player in the country, in 2002. After signing with Major League Soccer, Eskandarian was selected with the #1 overall pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by DC United and played in MLS for 8 seasons with DC United, Toronto FC, Real Salt Lake, and LA Galaxy. He was twice named an MLS All-Star and was named MLS Cup MVP in 2004 as he led DC United to the championship. He was also a member of the US Men's National Team before being forced to retire at the age of 27 due to concussions.
