Nel primo episodio facciamo un'introduzione generale, parlando della Parigi di metà Ottocento in cui ritroviamo tutti i principali pittori impressionisti e in cui sta avvenendo una sorta di "rivoluzione urbana" con il fiorire di parchi e giardini pubblici come luoghi di ritrovo e di divertimento. Il giardino in questo periodo diventa un'ossessione pittorica per artisti come Caillebotte, Monet e Pissarro che dipingeranno ognuno con il proprio stile i loro giardini privati.
