Oh, you bet you like that, didn't you? Chris. What? I think we're low now.
You looked so deep in my eyes when you said that. I think we're low. Oh my god, that's hot. Meanwhile, I'm lying big time because Lizzy's three feet away.
Our fact checker. Our fact checker. Did that song remind you of anything? Maybe by any chance?
We're out back to the fond memories, Chris. Did it? Yeah. Of a great field movie.
I was gonna say like grade seven like dance. No. No. Okay.
Me and I can smile. I don't care. No. Never danced.
A good clear film movie. Are you saying? Okay. A good clear film.
So is that which one was that? The best clear film movie. You think the first one was better? I do because that's what started all of you.
Definitely was this one. No. Today, folks, on armchair reviews, we're talking Cloverfield paradox. Yeah, that's the third one in the franchise.
We kind of got this movie dropped in our laps. As an viewer. Stataneously. We got RKO into this movie.
I don't know where. That's right. Watch out. Watch out.
Watch out. It was. Oh man, but I was I ever pumped though. We were pretty excited.
Yeah, as soon as they dropped the news on. We tried to see each other or tweet or something. We were like, God damn, you see that. We didn't have anything to watch this week.
Definitely not. The only one that we were going to watch this week was probably the shape of water. Shape of water. But I really liked it.
No, well, but it was probably. It was almost guaranteed a better movie than what we watched. Almost definitely because I mean, it's just a reimagining. It's a Guillermo del Toro movie about pretty much the creature from the Black Lagoon.
A more advanced or I think it was the 60s actually, but still more modern telling of creature from the Black Lagoon. And I was like, psh, psh, psh, psh, psh, psh, I didn't really want to see it. I'll see it when it comes out on DVD or Netflix or whatever the book. It's a free time.
But I didn't really want to go to the theaters and it wasn't whatever. But we would have still gone to see it if that were the case for the people. For the people. For the people.
For the people. For the people that matter. That's exactly what armchair review is all about. For the people.
But then we're watching the Super Bowl, having a great time. And then all of a sudden a trailer comes up for this. And I was like, oh wait, I thought this movie was called the God Particle and wasn't going to be out until later in 2018. What?
Nope. Surprise. Guys, this came out immediately after the Super Bowl. It was really through a curveball.
No shit. It was really so Netflix. We should mention that. Oh, it was immediately released on Netflix.
And that's of course, of course it did. Because as you think of it now, when you think about all the other ones, Cloverfield, the first one in 2008, by the way. Yeah, 10 years ago. 10 years ago.
It had a viral campaign. Today. Today. Today.
Today. Today. Today. Today.
Today. Today. I don't know if that's true. It had a crazy viral marketing campaign, which is it was never very clear.
What was going on in the movie? And that just built the it was like a play-rich type thing. It was a thriller. What the fuck is happening?
I don't know what's going on. So it was intriguing people because people got to make up their own assumptions. Exactly. So it could be intriguing to everyone.
Instead of, well, we're just going to cut our like viewing party in half because. Yeah. And then the second one came out, 10 Cloverfield Lane, which was not a direct sequel. It was again a risky move where it was only like a month, maybe two months before the actual movie came out where they released a trailer for it.
And it was more. Very last minute. Very claustrophobic type setting. It's more of a set in a like a bombshell type thing.
You didn't really know what's going on. What does it have to do? Yeah. It didn't give anything away in the trailers, but you're like John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winston, great actors, small, confined looks terrifying.
I'm in. Okay. Good. So it's like, oh, by the way, releasing an hour from now.
Yeah. Watch it on Netflix with one trailer and we're kind of like, like we were excited because we like the Cloverfield universe, but I was so excited, but I was not excited. I was excited to go to theater for this. And then all of a sudden, like, oh, by the way, it's on Netflix.
You watch at home. Yeah. What the fuck? Thank God.
God it was free. We'll get to that. Let's talk about the first Cloverfield and then we'll talk about the second one and then we'll get into the Cloverfield paradox. So James, what did you think?
Oh, yes, your James. I'm Chris. Yeah. People love this.
You know, this. You're not new to us. We're new to you if you're new to listening us, but what did you think of the first Cloverfield, the OG Cloverfield, if you would? So when we were growing up, the only other movie that was really filmed, we were 17, by the way, 16, 17 around that age.
Yeah, but yeah, you're taking a couple months, you know. So yeah, growing up, the only other movie that really came out that was super popular with like the found footage of filming was the By Wish Project. Which was, I think, nine years prior. Yeah, we were super young for that, but I don't know.
I don't know what's just there. You have older siblings as well? Yeah. Yeah.
So we both probably watched it before we should have watched it. Wrong choice. Wrong choice. Super free movie.
Again, it's kind of all up to your imagination while they're filming, right? And so super scary. Super Playwritch. They're given in Cloverfield, but yeah.
And so I was super excited because I was really drawn to By Wish Project and everyone loved it. And now that we get this new movie, like we said with the trailers, we don't really know what's happening. We're kind of led to our own assumptions and what's going on. We know that it's going to be another found footage film and not everybody is crazy about that.
But I was super excited for it. So I had like seven friends over. We like we stuffed downstairs because it never came to our theater in life. Didn't know it didn't come to our theater.
Oh my God. So I got it the day it was released because I was working at Walmart at the time. I got the day I was released. I had like seven eight friends over after one more close.
Came over a pile downstairs. So your entire group was and done for this movie. Oh yeah, we were so stoked. Nice.
We watched it. Obviously like walked in the whole movie. Lights off. Lights off.
Perfect. It was an awesome time. I think we even watched it twice. It was awesome.
We need to reabsorb everything. And yeah, so I've seen it a few times. It was such a good start to the universe. And for that movie too, it was almost like a good zill attacking, right?
But think of the actors that are involved in that. TJ Miller, the comic relief, who is now a huge comedian now. The actress plays Marlena. What's her name?
She's in a bunch. She plays one of the sex therapists. And no, she's actually really good. I got it.
Lizzy Kaplan. That's what it is. Lizzy Kaplan. Yeah, fucking what's his name?
Michael Stull David, who's the main actor. He's also in season three of Narcos. You have Jessica Lucas, who plays Lily. She's the girlfriend of Buddy there.
Rob, Michael Stull David. She's also in Gotham. And Odette, oh sorry, Odette Annabelle. She's the girlfriend of Rob.
She plays Beth. So there's a bunch of actors in here that since then have made quite a name for themselves. They're killing it right now. First of all, so my experience with Cloverfield.
I had a movie theater right down. We call it Down the Hill from my house because it's literally down the hill. It's about 10 minute walk from my place. Clever name.
Yeah, it's Down the Hill, dude. And it's a single-plex audience, whatever. We saw a group of us and Rob, who was on this podcast before, actually. We went to see it together, I think.
And we were both pumped up for this movie. We saw it and we were just so amped up, dude. We were so hyped for this movie. It delivered everything we wanted because all the viral marketing sold us hardcore.
Young little lads. And I loved everything. Everything about it. I really get frustrated with the found footage.
I actually really like found footage. People get like, especially in these suspense, borderline thriller. Especially this Blair Witch Project. People hate the Shaky Cam.
Shaky Cam can actually really fuck people up. I understand it. I don't feel it. I don't feel it.
Don't be a bitch, James says. I tend to agree with that. Some people kind of get vertigo and I get that. That's fine.
But I find if it's a well done found footage, it is so much more impactful because it makes it that much more real. I think that's what I think. It's so much better. It's like a first-person footage.
Do you like it or there? I feel like that's why the first and maybe in second or the Paranormal Activity franchise is for example, even though that was filmed in 2007, it wasn't popular until 2009. That's why it succeeded because it was done well. The later ones are questionable, obviously.
But that's why that movie succeeded. It was huge because it's like a $5 budget. 100%. It blew up and they're like, okay, now we can pay it for seven more minutes.
Exactly. Everything else is just great. What these movies tell you is like, what's less is shown? More is better.
Oh, I loved it. So I'm done coming over Clover Field 1. James, what do you think of 10 Clover Field Lane? A little bit different.
We were briefly talking about this before. We went live. It's a little bit different. It's not found footage.
Like you said, it's a claustrophobic feel. They're essentially stuck in that one room for the majority of the movie, right? There's a couple of rooms. I should say not the one room.
A bunker. A bunker. It's kind of like a bomb shelter. We were discussing bunker storage area converted.
It's a lot of crazy. John Goodman. How good is he? Classic John Goodman.
Here, put it on the record. John Goodman needed to get fucking Oscar nominee for that fucking role. Okay. What a psycho.
It's so good. Yeah, John Goodman was awesome. He was probably one of his best, his best earnings, I think. Easily in the past couple years.
Oh, in the past couple years, 100%. But overall, in his whole career, that was probably his best role. Like he did good. I, uh, he killed.
I can't think of his other roles around him. Maybe, monuments, maybe. But he's done a lot of stuff lately too. Like he was in, uh, Flintstones in like, like, 98.
Um, like the Hangover 3 or whatever. What's he in Hangover? He was. And, uh, like, yeah, he's done some silly stuff.
The Big Lebowski. He was good. He was good. Again, it was a silly role.
Yeah. But yeah, 10th-Lorville Lane, another good movie, a great installment, a great second piece. Like you said, it was risky. It was completely different.
They didn't really promote it beforehand. No. They were like a trailer a couple weeks before. Boom.
It's coming out. And it came out. Like, again, I don't even think it definitely didn't come at theaters here. So I, I...
I was living in the young night from the time. Yeah, so it did. L That's it. That's it.
That's it. That's it. John Gallagher. That's the same.
But it's like, why the fuck, why this is a clover field? Is there a... Is there some sort of, uh, disease? Is there giant monsters outside?
Why is this movie called Cloverfield? Why is there a clover field in it? They get the end of it and they're like, oh. But it's kind of different.
see, I spent on you, sorry. Love it. And then this one, it seems like aliens are intruding. I don't really get it, but still so good.
Because the intensity of it came from the actor's performances. The actors in this drove the movie, and that's exactly what you needed from this type of movie. Yeah, in a confined space, you need those people to have that kind of charisma to keep it at a high level. Actually, you know what I said, how Clerifield one was the best one earlier in this movie?
I almost think this one tops it. That's what it was like. Of the performances. Because you only have so much to do.
And oh my god, these actors in this movie fucking lifted it so much, so much from what it could not have been. Could not have been, exactly good point. Could not have been. It's easy to toss some people in the room.
But we've seen movies like that before where they just failed. Where they've had like, you can look back at some movies, for example, where you get a group of people that are stuck in the same building or whatever. First Saw movie, Great, everyone else was like, ah, I'm retiring, I don't know what to do. That's the exact sound that made.
It's like Waterboy. Adam Sandler was the same. But yeah, they killed it. They did good.
And that's what I was saying. I don't know if we started recording it, but I was kind of saying that I think the second one was the best, not by much, but slightly better than the first one, especially for the general audience, being everyone. Because of shaky. And this one, it could also be seen as a standalone.
The second one. At this point, before Paradox came out, this one could be seen as a standalone. Yeah, you could guard this other name. It could be, you could watch this one and be satisfied with it.
Just as it has anything to do with the first one. Yeah, exactly. However, with Paradox, here. So now we're talking about Cloverfield Paradox.
All right, here we go. So what do you think about Cloverfield Paradox as a whole? Just real quick before we get into details. As well, I've taught my head without getting into details, it was boring.
A little bit, right? Yeah. Kind of. I think it, I mean, obviously, it's calling it boring.
It could obviously be better. Yeah. But I don't think they were that far off from making it better? No.
But at the same time, yeah, it was kind of a snoo-sket. There's something missing, right? Yeah. There's an overhaul overhaul.
Overall. They needed an overhaul. Seriously. There's something missing about it.
Excuse me. This movie, obviously, we were really happy about it. It was initially called the God Particle. It was coming out sometime in 2018, we didn't know.
And in typical Cloverfield fashion, where you didn't know what the fuck was going to happen with it, poof. All of a sudden, after Super Bowl, guess what? It's on Netflix. It's available to everybody.
Cool. So I try to watch it immediately as long as you pay your $14 a month. Yeah, they jack the prices. But how dare you, Netflix?
Netflix, we still love you. If you want to sponsor us, it's whatever. Yeah. I've been signed up since the first day.
We're the customers. We're never paying that $8 a month. And you do me like that? We're not pleading sponsors.
It's fine. Jack and you have it's fine. We love you, Netflix. We love you, Netflix.
But really, I like the whole marketing of it, because it was so sudden. I love how it just came to me. I didn't have to go out to see it. No.
Just like, boom, it's right there. And it was neat the way they did it, because so many people watch the Super Bowl, too. Oh, yeah. And even people watch the commercials.
They watch you just with the commercials rather than the actual football. So even people that weren't watching the Super Bowl live, they're going to pop up on YouTube a few minutes later. Boom, 2018 Super Bowl commercials. And they're going to see that trailer, find out it's out.
And boom, there you go. And everyone in America knows. It might be even smart for them to do that, because they're saving money on advertising, because they'll pay a lump sum to have that one Super Bowl. One time.
And I don't know if, obviously, I'm not in advertising or something, but it may be one time lump sum. And then boom, it's out. By the way, we're all here tonight. Without that whole three month, four month advertising campaign, it's just boom, it's right out there.
So that might have paid dividends for them. Who knows? Their budget wasn't too crazy. 45 mil.
That's what Wikipedia says. I think IMDB wants to list it as like $20 million or something. I think $26. Various.
We'll call it $45 for now. In the middle, let's do averages. Let's do the mean. It'll probably be like $30 million, $30 million, which is still for what it's a lot of space stuff.
There's a couple of effects in there. Yeah, it's an effect. It's a mean thing. Destroyed.
It's pretty good. Oh, that's true. Yeah. Good.
I don't remember that. Remember when Ava says when it was his name, Michael? He's going to go to the hospital to tell him. There's a couple scenes with the teller.
You don't even see it getting destroyed. It's already dilapidated. So it's like a green screen. It's fine.
But yeah, so this movie, James said he wasn't very happy with it. I was also kind of underwhelmed. But there were some good things that came out of it. There are a lot of people that are shooting on this movie.
And I would love to be one of them because I'm like, it's got some tough ratings right now. I love the Color Field franchise. I want to see it expand. And although this movie, on initial review, I watched it one and a half times because the first time I watched it was immediately after the Super Bowl, which I was slightly intoxicated for.
Slowly, slightly, it's fine. Slightly. And then I watched it again with James earlier this week. And I understood a lot more of it now.
But it was still underwhelming. There's some, again, we'll go back to the good parts. It just was lackluster. I like where it just seems too much of a stepping stone for what's to come.
And I'm excited for what's to come because it opens a wide-ass door for all these type of possibilities for Color Field to go. That's what I did like. Yeah, that's the huge benefit of it. And just off the bat, it's kind of lame-boring.
I don't want to say shitty because it wasn't that bad. But just not a good way of trying to tie together the first two movies and then opening up everything else. So it was marked, I guess it was kind of marketed as a direct sequel to Cloverfield 1. I can see that, obviously, at the end, you get that.
But again, it's really loose. Second one, the 10 Cloverfield Lane, almost seems like its own Sanway movie. Again, if you really understand the movie, it'll understand it more. You'll get it why it's connected to all the one.
Yeah, so we could probably. Let's break it down. Let's break it down. Let's get it into the plot.
James, break down the plot. Real quick, let's get into the plot. So this one is based in 2028. Yes.
The Earth is going through an energy crisis. There's like a lack of waste. Do you use energy, I guess? Or to resources are going to run up somehow.
There's energy. No, no, no. Energy's lacking. Energy's lacking.
That's a good word for it. They don't really go into too much detail. Anyhow, so they've created this Cloverfield Station to go up into space to try to find a new way to make energy. They think they found it.
And the only way they can do that safely is in space. Is it space? If they were to do it on Earth, the Earth would get probably imploded or something. Yeah, they lead you to believe that the Earth could essentially explode or there is an explosion or something.
Too many people would be harmed. It's very similar to the fears of the Hadron Collider in Where Is It in Sweden or something. Yeah, somewhere it's going to be. Somewhere over there.
Anyhow. So they send a Cloverfield Station away from Earth. We talk movies, guys. We don't know science, OK?
We're athletes. We're athletes. Not scientists. And so they send the Cloverfield Station to space.
And they've got that particle accelerator, which, for whatever reason, they've named the Shepherd. The Shepherd, yeah. It's an international space group. Yeah, so there's a bunch of people from all over the place we can get to that later.
Yeah. Yeah, so they're trying to fire this thing up. It's essentially a big bean. It's a bean trying to produce a restorable energy or something like that.
Yeah, again, they don't really get into the type of energy. But anyhow, so they're trying to fire up the Shepherd. And it fails a couple of times. Think of 20 Starks.
Fucking Arc Reactor. It's like reusable energy, everything. I don't know. So they get up in the space and they fire this thing up like pretty much right off the get-go.
And it fails. It fails. It like overheats or whatever happens. It doesn't work.
And then it goes on like a time warp. Not time warp, but it goes over days. Days, so it's day 16, they try it. And then day 27, then day 130, and then day 400.
So you find out that they've been there for just under two years. It's like six hundred and seven days. Yeah, we're in the 600-something days. And Ava's talking to her husband, Michael, and she- The main character, Ava.
Yeah, she's talking to her husband, Michael, who's back on Earth. And she's kind of like, we only really have power to do three more attempts. And then the station's going to shut down, essentially, or whatever. It just doesn't have to be able to try it again.
Yeah, they make it seem like it's a pretty grieve situation. Anyhow, so they go and they try it again. Oh, but the reason why they're on timeline, because back on Earth, there's almost rumblings of a World War 3 because Michael, Ava's husband, is saying Russian troops are going to do a ground assault on Germany or something. Yeah, Russians are being dicked.
You have little hints that there's about to be a revolution or something. Or something catastrophic on Earth. Do you need energy to save the planet ASAP? Yeah, so they're a little bit of time crunch because of the threat of another World War breaking out.
But at the same time, they have to have everything- Obviously, it has to be precise, whatever science. It has to be Gucci, dude. It has to be Gucci, Maine. So they get it all set up to go again.
And this time they're able to hold a stable- Stable beam. Stable beam. But then, yeah, I think what happens that time is when- They just open up the- They split the dimensions. They get transferred across the solar system.
That's what happens. And that's the inciting incident. So they separate things. They lose themselves.
They disappear from Earth's solar system. Or no, sorry, they disappear from Earth's gravitational pull, whatever the- The beam. So the beam, as soon as they get the stable beam, it's just about to get to 100% and it overloads. And that causes a power surge on the station.
And then all of a sudden, boom, that's when the dimensions- Tear. Open up for tear, however you want to call it. You don't know this, though. But then they're kind of like, oh shit.
We only got two more tries left. Everyone's kind of getting fed up at this point. The Russian guy on the station is being a dick. And they realize, wait, where did the fuck did Earth go?
And they realize, oh, Earth didn't move. We moved. They moved and they kind of realized that, oh shit, maybe all the- Maybe we did tear dimensions. Maybe who the fuck knows where we are right now?
Because there was a bit of a newscast there with the actor, Donald Loge. He's Mark Steep, where I think he's like, oh, this could cause a bunch of tear- He's back on Earth. He's like a conspiracy theorist, but he's also like a- Physicist or something? Who coincidentally enough, he shares the last name of Jon Goodman's character's last name.
But you don't know if they relate it all because it's different universes type thing. But who ever? His theory pretty much partially comes correct and they split dimensions. So a whole lotta wonky shit happens and they realize dimensions are crisscrossing and they're intertwining themselves with what's happening, so you get a whole bunch of wacky shit, so- Yeah, there's some spooky stuff Science happening on the ship.
This is where the thriller part of the movie really comes in. So first of all, the Russian guy, so they've got like a farm of worms on the ship. that's not important let's talk about the Russian guy comes across he reads the German guys logs and thinks he's gonna sabotage the ship So in this other dimension that they transferred to the German fellow Schmidt is his last name Daniel the actor Daniel Broule was also in Captain America Civil War as Baron Nemo or Zeemol. I should say yeah, so his name is Schmidt and he Yeah, classic and in this universe he's talking back to like the German military and he's gonna sabotage the whole thing That's so we'll talk to Earth to his version of Earth to is being a prick Dimension two Earth two so Earth one guy is in Earth two now, but he's not earth two guys He's not earth one guys now in dimension two where earth two is being a dick.
I guess earth to talk to Schmidt to Whatever it's meant to like y'all fuck over this whole thing on purpose So now that those logs are in Earth one's ship. Yeah, it's in Earth twos It's the sounds really confusing It's a little bit of a place it's a little bit of bullshit. Yeah, so the Russian guy reads his logs and he's like oh fuck He's trying to focus over so the Russian guy 3d prints a gun But he's also his skins coming rubber his eyes going wonky He knows something's going like he knows something's messed up is some interdimensional wax shit going on He's invested with worms anyways he prints his gun and he's going to kill Schmidt and And Asian lady ham ham ham is her last name anyway, so he's he goes and he confronts them and just as he's about to pull a trigger He kind of he has a seizure he has a seizure and dies and then oh no First out of his mouth. Yeah, they all come like spewing out of his mouth and whatnot.
No, okay. This is fucking weird. He's dead Well, yeah, yeah, and then they find the guy wrote in his chance of stuff Fine fine The gen's thing right now because that's probably the one the best scenes in this movie is when because because they Interdimensional stuff like that things aren't what they seem they they hear a noise in the wall They open the wall and then boom there's a lady in the wall Jensen's she stuck like there's electrical going through her body They're like oh, it's beautiful body horror I know it sounds sick when you say beautiful body work. It looks at one of the best scenes where she's like oh There's why it's so gross.
They're cutting the wires out of her and there's three years wires and there's like beams Blender yeah, it's a bunch of weird shit anyway. She's stuck in the wall obviously not supposed to be there Elizabeth DeBeckey the actress he's also in Guardians the Galaxy 2 she plays Aisha He's also in Mans uncle as the hottie blondie. She's gonna name the six foot five and pay out his fucking his movie She's actually six foot three. Yeah still Paul's no space.
She's six foot five So they find her in a wall and they pull her out of the wall whatever and they're kind of confused about like why she here When she's kind of spewing this bullshit and then they're like definitely realizing that they're in a different dimension at this point She's the she's the catalyst for realizing that they're in another dimension because she's the the engineer Where's the division to in dimension to and to have is there a dimension right? So she's like who the hell is this check she points at Tam and everyone's like what do you mean? But she's like well everyone's here. No, she's going crazy since you she's spewed the shit and then they're all realize like You know a lot more about us than I thought you would it's not too like a fanatic or anything But yeah next and like last really like spooky thing that happens Monday is doing repairs on that same wall Yeah, he's fixing it sealing it up with his super cool stuff.
Yeah arm just goes through the wall Yeah, and they get dragged a little bit dragged around the wall It's kind of like weird you don't really know what's going on and Monday's actually a little bit of conic relief He's like the funny so down. Yeah, he's the funny guy on the ship and then boom He like pulls away from the wall and his arm is just going off. There's no pain No, nothing can we just talk about this real quick though because it comes up a little bit later on to a little bit later But how fucking chill is his character for losing an arm? Dude your arm is gone you have clearly you see your fucking tibia and or whatever the fucking all not and radius I know shut up your all not and radius bone and your humerus Just you see your arm opening it's a fucking steak and he's like whatever Yeah, no problem and then to top it off.
They bind his fucking arm Around in the hallway and so they get his arm to capture it whatever and then his arms kind of looks like it's trying to write Something to give it a pen says cut open the Russian they cut open the Russian and then the Russian has the gyro And the whole reason they've lost the communications to earth is because they haven't had the gyro So take the gyro they plug it back into the cloverfield station and boom they found earth they can talk to earth again Oh, I know it's a weird man. I know it sounds confusing once you've seen it You'll understand obviously if you're listening this you should understand because that's what we're talking about But it's kind of a whole jumble That's a jumble so that all happens pretty much majority of the plot they get to the end Jensen yeah, but the Jensen still kind of locked up so well guys there at this point Oh money blows up. He dies. Let's talk about okay.
Let's talk about Jen or money's death and Tam's death so they realize Tam realize is that the only reason why they're the ship didn't work was because there's condensation So she goes to try to figure it out But then water starts filling up abundantly out of nowhere in a locked cell So okay fuck off why is water just all of a sudden filling up out of nowhere? That's bullshit and then I mean once it does like the whole thing busts open it freezes She dies that seems cool. It's pretty cool. Why did it happen also second of all why did Mundy's fucking fucking spray sealant start coming across and Magnithing and then grab him and start filling in his holes bullshit again So what I'm wondering and any blows up any blood will the carbon dioxide see it too?
He blows up so what I'm wondering is is this dimension like almost a character in and of itself because it's trying to combat People that aren't supposed to be in its own dimension because that's a whole lot. That's what it seems like right it does Yeah, but they don't they don't really explain it but why why are these certain things happening that should be happening? There's a full cell of water just escaping and there's no reason for it It's just really sick happening. I know I you're trying to give it to much credit It's just really sick happening really they're trying to kill people off to open room for Jensen to come in to do her thing I get that but it's still frustrating as fuck I know you need people to die but and they're creative we just die But make it make sense because now you're just making the ship seem like it's autonomous and trying to kill these people when it's like When it's not when it's not the ship it seems like the autonomous dimension It's like it's like a final destination where these people are meant to die because they're not in the right place Yeah, you know what I mean like that's it's kind of what it feels like But I don't think that's what it's not what it's supposed to mean, but that's a whole that's what I got from it Maybe it's what you felt like it and I don't know it's just stupid And while these people are dying you don't really give up because you know nothing about anyone except for Eva good point There's no there's no character development other than Eva She's the only one that has a husband that you realize who has a husband or had kids She obviously fucked up back in earth one your kids are dead whatever you know yourself so sorry whatever at least she has character development And she's you know she goes through an arc where oh, I miss my kids Oh, I'm gonna go back to earth I'm gonna go back to earth on earth two and see them and they'll understand but no I can't do that because this is Earth 2 Earth 2 yeah, which I mean is here and I need to save I need to save because Whatever the fucking name is it's mess.
Oh my god. Well, you don't give a fuck away You've been Eva at the same time like her kids they're dead and earth one but then in earth two and she kind of plays Get a bit of compassion fatigue for Ava here, okay Just get a little bit of it cuz it's like there's a lot of lingering camera angles on her It was like because only one we know anything about I think you care less because they just shut me down your throat Yeah, if you knew more about Schmidt or Monday or Volkop or Jensen Kiel who the fuck ever yeah, then it would bounce out then if they only gave Eva a couple times where she actually felt bad then you would feel bad instead of her feeling shitty the whole movie exactly It's just like a moped Every day every time she comes on you go here's the fucking downer And you see Michael her husband has a little bit of a story arc On earth because you know that whatever happens on one yeah So as soon as he helps a little kid and he's trying to find a pair of stuff as soon as they open up the Dimension or two dimensions or whatever that's what she should stop on earth Yeah, so he's watching the news or whatever and he hears that shit's going down So he's a doctor. He's rushing to the hospital help save more people Yeah, okay, that's why he's going to the hospital and then he finds the young girl right in a restaurant I don't know her fucking name. It's a little bit.
It's a little bit. But and then when he picks her up He finds out the hospital destroyed so that's why he just takes her back I'm gonna text messages. Yeah, and that's why he takes her back to his place and starts you also work in the magic see a mysterious movement in the clouds. Yeah, you see a shadow of the But anyway, they what's her face Jensen?
Whatever It matters what she says though Am I willing to kill three people to save eight billion? Yes, so that whole I don't want to say dichotomy But that whole that whole dilemma of that whole like a new personal dilemma That's perfect. That's her world down there. That is her world and these two guys Because her crew in her eyes already died They're ship blew up so am I gonna save my world right now?
Yes, because I have a chance to save eight billion on my planet This is these people to these people on earth one. These aren't from my planet I don't give a fuck about their world. Yeah, this is my time So she becomes a villain in the last end Whatever 3d pretty gun and so she becomes not a villain But I mean she becomes a villain in the viewer's eyes, but she becomes that much more complex which is appreciated as you kill She kills munk. We didn't fucking mention munk doesn't matter.
It doesn't matter But he's pretty much the doctor and that's why some games are munk. Yeah, so yeah Kill's munk. He shoots Schmidt twice. She knocks out Ava Yeah, and then yeah, and then Ava kills her through a fucking window or whatever Yeah, but anyway, so Ava and Schmidt end up producing they they fire up the shepherd They do their thing they produce the beam they get back home stable beam and they the skate pod and they This the best of us now they're back in the earth one.
Yeah, all of a sudden who the fuck how we don't know whatever their back Earth one the skate pod Michaels pass because they set up a communication thing Michael is like because they set the communications back up with the club station Yeah, Michael's trying to be like yo tell Ava and them not to leave the station Yeah, but they refuse to tell them that and he's trying to tell them that because shit's going down on earth obviously What they don't tell Ava and Schmidt that's a bit up in the little skate pod They come back everything's honky-dory and then you see that the last second of the movie just Yeah, it's huge it comes like over the clouds It's the same Cloverfield monster from Cloverfield one in 2008 first through the clouds So that you have to imagine this creatures at least hundred times the size of the first Cloverfield monster same identical look But the puffing eyes and like gangly arms and stuff just their clouds and drawers Yeah, and like the pot just crash this well it goes to the clouds and then it pops up like yeah You don't see it crashing on but it's the exact same spot like within second so But that's how it ends on so I again that ending is probably my favorite part because everyone's saying that That's the part that ties it all together yeah, but the whole thing that ties it all together is the fact that it's a paradox This thing is ripped multiple dimensions apart so earth one two three Which is pretty much all that these movies are there on separate universes different multi-tiered or cloverfield ten Cloverfield Lane and Cloverfield paradox. They're all on different planets essentially because they're on different Dimensions yeah, so especially since Cloverfield one 2008 Cloverfield paradox 2028 if you listen to Donald O's characters Mark's stamblers and his TV Warning or conspiracy theory it's it splits up time and space So it doesn't matter where you are in the timeline because time is a fucking construction it'll Doesn't matter so that's why it's split up. That's why the monster came in 2008 in that world That's why monsters came in 2028 in this world cuz all fucking Tied together from one action even though it's one action. It's it's multiplicitous.
Yep. That's a word Multiply says the same thing as duplicitous. I think it's a word. I hope it's a word.
It makes you sound really smart right now It's a word now. It's a word now check it up Webster's but that's and then in ten chlorophyll Lane That's why instead of monsters and stuff aliens because who knows what happened with that? Yeah, who knows that because it's spaceships and stuff in ten chlorophyll Lane at the end of it But that's why it's saying is with ripping the dimensions open which I think is what you're trying to get at is that it's not just the one monster It's like they rip into so many different dimensions that you can get all these different type of like horse coming back exactly All these threats or different kinds of things as he says it's like it's it's monsters aliens beasts from the sea demons Whatever you can all sorts think of so that's what leads open to that's why I like this I don't like the movie per se there's good things. I like about it We talked about it the point it gets across is a good point is that it's gonna lead open to a multiplex of ideas of chlorophyll sequels that could be fantastic and they don't all have to relate to each other no They can all relate to the paradox have to have the name and then refer to this movie and let's talk about it right now Because we've done a little research There's gonna be a chlorophyll before it's called right now Obviously they have working titles for these movies Obviously this one is what we called God particle the next one is coming on October called Cloverfield overlord October this year Yeah, 2018 so it's called overlord and it happens when two US paratroopers land in World War two Germany Yes, we're in 1940 so 19.
I think it's set in 1944. Yeah, where they discover German forces are using supernatural whatever's So that's pretty cool. Yeah, so we're excited for the basis of that movie as it now Yeah, and I was you can say I'm pretty amped up for I love this movie. I love these franchise as a shame Should say no shame shame shame.
I'm not saying say say say say but this movie is a good stepping stone I didn't like it, but I like things of it. It's necessary It is necessary. They just could have done a little bit more with the characters and a little bit less with Eva 100% good call Spend less time and even share that love to some of the other guys that you can care about them because he didn't That's not even that creative. Oh one thing we did notice though.
That was really cool was when the foosball table was fucking going Batch it. Yeah, right when they switched dimensions. Yeah And the fingers were switching in earth one all the characters are red or blue. Yeah, so you know red team blue team Everyone's played blues ball ball.
Yeah after the dimensions change the guys are spinning around like you know You're spinning like when you play it and then it stops and then boom red yellow and blue Yeah, we know it's one of the characters actually switches right in front of the camera red to yellow Yeah, right there and actually our fact checker here Lizzy caught that I was like wait, okay go back Go back. Let's do that and sure enough. That's exactly what happened like I would not have caught that and James caught it But he didn't say we're wine, so I'm not gonna credit him. I don't rewind Well, we have Netflix dude.
It's not like we saw in the theater. We can ride it What would you would you recommend this movie here's a thing if you like the cloverfield franchises and you're gonna go ahead and See the other ones after this. Yeah, so I agree the nice thing is that it's on Netflix. So it's free if you have Netflix It's an hour and a half Crushing things to our dude.
No, it's not a two minute. So it's an hour for you. Okay, sorry. You got the fact on the fly Yeah, so Christy look it up to see if I'm lying I'm not like but it's shit the radio went down since the start of this podcast.
Oh, I went up though It was 5.7. Oh shit. Yeah, real good. It's not a 5.8.
No, but like I was saying yes Go ahead and watch it if you like the franchise if you don't like the other two movies don't waste time Yeah, I agree if you're fan the popper's act fan the podcast, you know you can email us If you're a if you're a fan the cloverfield like a franchise you're you're like it I think but you may not cuz we didn't but it's a necessary step for the future ones I mean, there's you can watch the other movies no problem like this doesn't matter It's not gonna affect the other ones if you like the other ones It's not gonna hit or anything But I think I think James is spot on where it's a necessary step for the future It actually opens up many doors for this cloverfield brand all of the doors to open up and Who knows what's gonna happen the next one? James have you watched anything since we're done while talking about cloverfield have you watched anything recently that you want to talk about? I watched babysitter on Netflix. Oh, yeah, I think I might have talked about that earlier Yeah, I think I was when we did happy death day.
We kind of brought it up for three seconds I watched out of the time. Yeah, I hadn't seen it yet It's kind of like the same genre is like stupid or flick, but it's it's all the way right? Yeah, it's very self-aware They're not trying to be serious at all like right from the So it's like a teen slasher comedy type thing Yeah, but if you're one of those people who is always looking up like oh like hidden gems on Netflix or whatever reason It's on a lot of those lists right and honestly, I don't really know why it was fun You know for what it is if you're into those kind of movies a good cast silly borderline It's I want to say borderline slasher flick, but like slasher flick still try it is a slasher flick So like try to be scary, you know what I mean? No, but it is slasher in a sense that it's a comedic slasher.
Yeah Yeah, especially since the at the end like you know, it is what it is But yeah, I mean that's another one of silly movies like if you liked happy death day Or if you you were a fan like the scream movies growing up like even the scream MTV showbook. Yeah, give it give it a world Yeah, it's 80 minutes crush it. You could easily crush it. Oh, it actually is entertaining for sure dude And there's a lot of like splashing blood and like silly deaths.
Yeah, it is enjoyable No real big name act Like Robbie Why are you sure He's his name is Robbie Amell he's the cousin of Stephen Amell who plays arrow on arrow arrow Is the original firestorm anyway, so I think I think that's it. I think that's really the only major thing that I've watched me. I haven't seen before every watch a few things here Yeah, I've I've just started watching a Netflix series called altered carbon which is Phenomenal if you're any fan of ultra violence Dicks tits And just a good storyline. That's that's almost it's on par if not better than HBO.
This should be its own movie. It's with the fucking what's the name Joel Kiniman who you may know from RoboCop and suicide squad don't hold that against him as Rick flag Yes, it's it's it's a perfect futuristic type Crime thriller. It's amazing. So it's it's set in the like 300 years in the future or whatever People can replace themselves with so-called sleeves as long as their neck like data stick data cute or disk or something It's still intact.
It is phenomenal. I've only I've only watched two episodes. It is fantastic This is Netflix at its peak. I want more shows like this.
I can't wait to finish the season It is phenomenal watch altered carbon if oh if you want phenomenal TV watch it James what you got So another Netflix series I've heard really really good things about that I haven't started watching it But I'm going to my next Saturday's off go for is a manhood unibar dude. I watch already Yeah, I've heard a bunch of unreal things. Well, I told you about it first Dude fucking Sam Worthington and what's his face? What's the vision's name?
Paul what's fucking name? What's that dude? Christine look up and coming up next week. We are going to see 50 shades free just kidding.
We are definitely not watching that Chris Chris we're gonna date no, we're gonna go see three billboards outside ebbing Missouri Paul bet me that's his name Yeah, okay, but we're gonna go see three billboards outside ebbing Missouri right now This movie is having phenomenal reviews. So we are pretty pumped to see that and the trailer is hilarious. It's pretty funny It's very funny. Especially like the last 20 seconds are here going So yeah, that should be good time.
