Cindy’s mother, a paranoid schizophrenic, often beats her and Cindy locks herself in the bathroom to sleep at night. Her father has numerous girlfriends and begets half-brothers and sisters who also beat up on the hapless girl. She finds a Bible that gives her comfort until her mother chops it up while she’s at school. When she gets pregnant by a local rowdy, they marry, prompting her father to disown her. She escapes into romantic fantasy novels, divorces her husband and raises their daughter. She lives with Mike for several years, but his family doesn’t accept her. They marry, have a son and go to church. The pastor visits and leads them to Christ. Both are active in ministry at church, but Cindy is now battling multiple sclerosis.
