Arsenio Alert! Tonight on KPFA: Tribute to Arsenio Rodriguez: 25th anniversary show. This evening at 9 PM (PST) and 12 Midnight (EST) we pay tribute to the musical genius that was Arsenio Rodriguez, whose influences in music were enormous. From Mambo to Salsa to Timba; the musical ideas of Arsenio have spread around the world. Join us as we play a potpurri of mis music from his 30 year recording career. We will also hear an interview with Arsenio recorded for Colombian Radio in 1964. Arsenio Rodriguez expanded the existing son music as played by the old sextetos (such as Sexteto Habanero or Sexteto Nacional) by adding the Conga drum and piano to the mix. This, the connecting of the Bongo and the Conga, laid the sonic groundwork for the addition of the timbale to the percussion section in New York by Machito shortly afterward.
