29: Sexuality and Spirituality

Hey Bessie, send us a text message!Do you need to divorce your sexuality to embrace your spirituality? The universality of the adage that sexuality and spirituality are two poles on a spectrum that never meet is even more true if you are queer. Many times, you are told that your orientation is not welcome at church, or that you are not queer enough to be part of your own community because you are 'religious'.   It is frustrating and hurtful as a queer person to be seen and treated based solely on one’s sexuality, while society chooses to ignore other facets of your humanity. When it doesn’t matter if you are the diligent breadwinner of your family, a loving son or daughter, a doting parent, a caring sibling, a dependable friend, a law-abiding citizen – and all that matters is that you love somebody they deem not suitable for you based on their personal interpretation of a book that has suffered innumerable translations for two millennia – you start to wonder if the concept of “god” is what they say it is. As part of our Usapang+Sex Series, the Project speaks to Nancy Shadlock on how she has somehow managed to come to terms with both aspects of her persona to live a life with a semblance of peace.  Nancy is a former pastor with a Master’s degree in Spiritual Formation, and perhaps more importantly, a proud queer woman, married with two kids.
