292: Yobidashi
from Sumo Kaboom Hosted by Sumo Kaboom Podcast
From playing drums to managing the tournament setup, the yobidashi's work keeps sumo running smoothly. They ensure that tradition, logistics, and even plumbing are in place — all while maintaining hidden hierarchies and skills that go back centuries. It’s wild to think that they build the dohyo by hand, chant in melodic calls, and connect past traditions with modern tournaments. This world is full of respect, hierarchy, and centuries of tradition—yet often overlooked. Next time you watch sumo, remember: the yobidashi make it all happen.
