#295 Gun Rights vs Gun Control

from And Another Thing with Dave · host Dave Smith

In this episode: I talk with @Aricka and @Hotmamaofstereo from the Stereo app. Hotmama..., got a phone call every parent of school aged children in the U.S. is hoping never to get. Her child called from school telling her they were on lockdown due to a live shooter at the school. It turned out to be a false alarm thank god. This is the type of phone call no parent wants to get, yet is becoming more and more frequent here in the U.S.  While lax gun laws may be to blame in some states, the elephant in the room that nobody is talking about is mental health. The U.S. for some reason, seems to be creating more crazy mass shooters than any other country in the world. Shootings here have reached epidemic proportions, and everyone agrees something must be done. While advocates for stricter gun laws advocate for gun control legislation, there is hardly any talk of the mental health crisis we are facing.  The United States is the only industrialized nation that does not have some form of Universal Healthcare in place for its citizens. Even South Africa offers its citizens healthcare. Free healthcare would mean free MENTAL healthcare. The lack of healthcare and the epidemic of shootings is a link that you will never hear the mainstream media make, but there seems to be an obvious connection.  Not only do we lead the world in mass shootings, but the average lifespan in the U.S. is now declining. Deaths of despair are now the leading cause of death for middle aged men in the U.S., which are deaths resulting from drug/alcohol abuse, or suicide. Healthcare bills are the leading cause of bankruptcy here in the U.S. The average U.S. citizen cannot even afford a $400 emergency. Our government does nothing to help those being further squeezed by corporate price gouging disguised as inflation but instead offers political platitudes and ridiculous rhetoric.
