He developed what became known as the stakeholder concept, arguing that business sits within a much wider social system, with responsibilities to employees, government, communities and society. More than five decades later, that thinking feels anything but dated. In our current economy shaped by technology, AI and systems operating across borders, who carries responsibility and accountability has become even more pressing.The question now is whether stakeholder capitalism needs to evolve again because the systems themselves have become centres of power. That takes us directly into Prof. Schwab’s latest book, The Competitive Enterprise in the Intelligent Age, and his argument that we are moving beyond another technological revolution into a new age altogether.We also explore the fascinating evolution of soft power. Professor Schwab reflects on his work with Professor Joseph Nye and how influence has become more complex, technological and, at times, more coercive. Yet the conversation ends somewhere unexpectedly hopeful: constructive optimism.
