English SummaryA little while ago I posted a Note saying that a set of LINE stickers of mine had been approved. Today I want to tell you what was behind it — and it’s something of a confession. For two and a half years, I had been holding on to some photographs. Back then I was making stickers from photos of Kazu-kun, our dog, and my sister said, “Lovely. Make some of my cats too,” and sent me their photos. I said, “Sure, I’ll do it soon.” That “soon” did not arrive for two and a half years. It wasn’t that I didn’t know how. She had asked me precisely because she’d seen what I’d made; we both knew I could do it. The real reason was simpler: there was no deadline. Nobody was chasing me. I could do it any time — which meant I never did. And the longer it went on, the harder it became to bring up. Not being asked “is it ready yet?” made it heavier, not lighter. It would prick at me whenever I remembered, and each time I decided it didn’t have to be today. I kept that up for two and a half years. What finally moved me was not willpower. Late last month I listened to a live stream by Ayu, an AI creator I met here on Substack — a woman much younger than me, publishing while raising a small child — and learned that stickers can now be made far faster with image-generation AI. While I had been standing still, the method itself had changed. Then I was invited into a group of people who make them. Honestly, my sister’s cats weren’t on my mind at all; it just looked interesting. So I made a set of greeting stickers of Kazu-kun — the first I’d made in two and a half years — and enjoyed it far more than I expected. It was approved a few days later, and seeing Kazu-kun waving inside my phone made me think: I’d like to make more.I also joined a work session she runs, expecting to learn technique. What I actually came away with was different. For instance, you can submit without filling in the tags — the very place where, working alone, I had stalled because I felt I had to do it properly. That isn’t the kind of thing a search engine tells you. What everyone actually does, and where you’re allowed to ease off: that information only lives where people are. Sitting in that atmosphere, I suddenly thought — maybe I can touch those photos now.The next day I opened them. It was finished almost embarrassingly quickly. And for the cats I worked from the photos she had sent me, so I used no AI at all. Which means it was a job the me of two and a half years ago could have done. The tools were never what was missing. I was the one who had stopped. What I had spent two and a half years making heavy was not the work; it was my own head. “I have to do it properly.” “She asked me, so it should be good.” All the while I hadn’t moved an inch.It was approved a few days later. My sister was delighted and started using them straight away, and now those cats turn up in the messages she sends me. It took two and a half years, but I’m glad I could finally hand them over. Here is what I most wanted to say. Starting again by pulling yourself together, alone — I tried that for two and a half years, and failed for two and a half years. What worked was listening to a live stream, and stepping into a room I’d been invited to. That was all. And while I stood still, the tools had quietly become lighter; on my own, I would never have known. The more conscientious you are, the more you may feel you ought to begin by your own will, that leaning on others is a kind of weakness. I felt that too. But going with the current isn’t cheating. Stepping into a place where people are already moving is often far quicker than the time you’d spend blaming yourself for not moving. One last thing. Is there something you keep meaning to do that is still sitting there — a reply you haven’t sent, a document half written, a book you bought to study and closed at chapter two? You don’t have to finish it today. Instead, just look in on a place where people are doing that very thing. A study group, an online gathering, somebody’s post. Don’t try to clear it all at once; add one colour at a time. Something that had been still for two and a half years moved in a week — and it started with a single invitation. This is a public episode.
