3/1 Maine Weather 6 AM: 10° Below Normal

from The Maine Weather Podcast

Good morning. Maine. I'm DJ Huzz. Folks, an arctic front blew through overnight and left the door wide open for Canadian air. That's why Portland wakes up at 28 degrees while Aroostook is already shivering at 12. The front stalled off the Downeast coast, so if you're in coastal Washington County, thick fog is sitting on top of everything until 7 A.M. Watch for icy patches on untreated roads. In the next 24 hours. The daytime story is quiet but cold. Light snow could dust the South Coast between 7 A.M. and early afternoon. Portland tops out at 30 degrees. Head up to Augusta and Bangor. Both stuck around 27. The mountains? Brutal. Highs near 15. The County barely touches 14. Today's high is running 10 degrees below the March normal. but we're gaining almost three minutes of daylight. Sunrise at 6:19 A.M., sunset at 5:30 P.M. Tonight is where it gets serious. The bottom falls out. Portland plunges to 6 degrees. Augusta drops to 1. Bangor hits minus 4. The Western Mountains sink to minus 6. Aroostook bottoms out at minus 9. Northwest winds gusting to 25 miles an hour will push wind chills to minus 20 up north. A Cold Weather Advisory kicks in at 1 A.M. Monday for northwest Aroostook and northern Somerset. That's frostbite on exposed skin in under 30 minutes. Cover every inch if you're heading out. Looking ahead. Monday brings sunshine but stays bitter. Highs range from 12 in the mountains to 26 on the coast. Tuesday is the turning point. Upper 30s, then snow rolls in Tuesday night. One to three inches by Wednesday morning. After that, the pattern flips milder. Rain or mixed stuff Thursday and Friday. By Saturday, some spots could flirt with 50 degrees. I'll be tracking that Tuesday night snow all week. Charge your phone and keep the wood stove loaded tonight. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow. For the extended outlook, check the latest forecast as confidence improves. Stay safe, stay prepared. and enjoy the day.
