3.1 Vṛtti: The Waves of the Mind
from The Mind in the Light of Modern and Spiritual Sciences · host Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre
A new module begins, and the ground shifts. Module 1 asked what the mind rests on; Module 2 mapped its four working parts. Now the group turns to the most intricate question of all: how is an experience actually built, moment by moment? For this more delicate stretch, Swamiji reaches for the language of waves. And the room has a new face: a doctor has joined, drawn by the patients he cannot always reach with medicine alone. The central idea is simple and freeing: everything you experience is a wave, a vṛtti. Not just feelings, but every thought, perception and memory rises, lasts a while, and subsides. This turns "I am anxious" into "a wave of anxiety is here," and that single shift gives a suffering person a foothold, the difference between drowning and noticing you are in water. In Vivekananda's image of the mind-lake, the still depth is the Self, the water is the mind, and the surface waves are the vṛttis. A wave is only the water taking a shape, and it leaves no stain. Stilling the mind is letting the water settle, not forcing the waves flat.Every wave has three dials you can learn to adjust: its size (how big and vivid), its speed (how fast it races or drags), and its alignment (whether thoughts, feelings, body and intention pull together or scatter). The clinical payoff is real: "anxious" might be large-fast-scattered or small-slow-flat, and you work with the dials, not the label. The episode also distinguishes five kinds of wave, clear knowing, misperception, imagination, sleep and memory, and notes that memory is not playback but a present-tense re-painting, coloured by today's mood, which is why a painful memory can be revisited and repainted more gently. The first freedom is simply naming the kind of wave that is present and reading its dials, so you become the one noticing it rather than lost in it.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:• Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mind• Advanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mindAlso available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
