Christ's words to the church at Laodicea are some of Scripture's hardest: because you are lukewarm, I am about to spit you out of my mouth. This message sits in that discomfort before letting the pendulum swing back to grace. The imagery is local. Laodicea drew worthless lukewarm water through an aqueduct, while Hierapolis had healing hot springs and Colossae cold, drinkable water. Lukewarm faith, Christ says, is of no benefit to the kingdom — the profile of one who knows the word but never does it, and measures himself against neighbors rather than Jesus. Yet the rebuke is love. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. Drawing on 2 Chronicles 7:14 and Acts 3:19 , the call is earnest repentance — not waiting for discipline, but running toward the one who still stands at the door and knocks.
