3.2.12: Lamentations 3: God's Mercy is New Each Morning, His Compassion Never Fails

This middle chapter of Lamentations is different from the other 4. Sandwiched between lamenting over Jerusalem and Judah’s punishment, Jeremiah praises God for His Mercy. Chapters 1, 2 and 4 of Lamentations are acrostic poems. The Hebrew language has 22 letters and each verse starts with a different letter of the alphabet. This made it easy for the people to memorize scripture. However, chapter 3 has 66 verses and it’s a triple acrostic with every 3 verses starting with a succeeding letter of the alphabet. This chapter was the inspiration for the hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness” by Thomas Chisholm, written in a log cabin in 1866. It’s embedded at the bottom.
