3.2 Interference: How the Knower Meets the Known
from The Mind in the Light of Modern and Spiritual Sciences · host Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre
Last time the group learned that everything you experience is a wave. Now they take a big next step: if experience is a wave, where does it come from? The surprising answer is that a perception is not a thing the world hands you. It is a meeting. Two waves, the world's and your own, come together and add up into the single thing you actually live.Because you live the meeting and never the bare world, two people can sit through the same moment and walk away from different ones. And here is the practical heart of it: you usually cannot change the wave the world sends, your friend's words, the exam date, the diagnosis, but the wave you bring can be settled and straightened, so the meeting changes even when the world will not. This is the seed of every contemplative practice. The episode uses the idea of a "beat," the rough pulse you feel when two rhythms are far apart. When your rhythm is far from the world's, you feel separate, strained, behind glass. As your rhythm comes close, the beat slows and you feel absorbed and clear. When it matches exactly, the beat vanishes into one full, steady presence, what athletes call flow and the contemplatives call samādhi. This reframes teaching and connection: a struggling student or a defensive teenager may not lack capacity or care; the wave they bring may simply be far from the material's, and the first move is not more information but meeting their rhythm. The group also meets the built-in tilt we all carry, the habit of turning every encounter toward "what does this mean about me?" Even a well-tuned mind, heavily self-tilted, cannot fully meet the world; at the extreme someone is present in body but absent in the meeting. The tilt is a posture, often built by fear or hurt, and it can be gently released with a breath and a choice to listen rather than defend. And when a mind is flooded by stress it stops meeting cleanly and manufactures its own false signals, phantom danger, self-feeding loops, flatness. Willpower cannot out-argue this; lowering the drive can. Settling the water so a clean meeting is possible again is often the healing itself.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:• Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mind• Advanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mindAlso available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
