3/3 Maine Weather 6 AM: Winter Weather Advisory

Good morning. Maine. I'm DJ Huzz. Step outside right now and you'll feel winter flexing its muscles. We're waking up to 9 degrees under clear skies, thanks to high pressure that really dragged the Arctic air down last night. But don't let that sunshine fool you. Things are about to get interesting. In the next 24 hours. Here's the story. Low pressure develops near Boston this evening and tracks right into the Gulf of Maine. That means we're looking at a classic setup for widespread snow. Folks in Portland see flakes start flying by 2 P.M. That evening commute is going to get slick, so plan ahead. You're looking at 2 to 4 inches piling up by morning. Head inland to Augusta and Bangor. And snow holds off until around 5 P.M. You'll see similar totals there. Enough to shovel, but not a burying. Downeast catches the heaviest band. The coast gets walloped with 3 to 5 inches as the moisture really cranks up. The Western Mountains see a lighter touch, with 1 to 3 inches arriving after 6 P.M. Up in The County? You mostly dodge this bullet. Just a chance of snow showers overnight with less than half an inch. Tonight won't be brutal, with lows ranging from 21 in Bangor to 28 Downeast. But that heavy, wet snow sticks to everything. Plan on a slow Wednesday morning commute. The good news? Wednesday brings the rescue. Sunshine returns and temperatures soar into the mid 40s. Most of that snow melts by afternoon. Looking ahead. Thursday stays cool in the low 40s, but another system brings snow Thursday night into Friday. The weekend looks beautiful though. Highs near 50 Saturday and Sunday. By Monday we could hit the mid 50s. On this day in 1971. Portland got walloped with 26 inches of snow. Today won't be that wild.
