3.3 Saṁskāra as a Live Filter: How Conditioning Shapes Every Perception

from The Mind in the Light of Modern and Spiritual Sciences · host Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre

Last time the group saw that a perception is a meeting of two waves. But there is a step hidden before that meeting. Long before your attention reaches a moment, the moment has already passed through everything that has ever happened to you. Your past is not filed away on a shelf. It is a live filter, colouring what you perceive before you notice anything at all.Swamiji offers a vivid image: your reaction has a signature, like a struck bell. How high it overshoots, how long it rings, and the faint after-hum are the bell's own signature, not the tap's. The same small event strikes two people very differently. He invites you to watch three things in yourself: the overshoot (a reaction far bigger than the event), the settling time (how long it rings), and the ripple (the faint unease that keeps washing back after you have "moved on"). Like a car suspension, a mind can be well-damped, dipping once and settling, or worn and under-damped, bouncing and bouncing. What softens the ring: living by your values, seeing clearly, slow breathing, calm unhurried time, and above all coming to know your own pattern.Because the colouring happens before perception, not after, the filter is invisible, like tinted glasses you have forgotten you are wearing. You experience a tinted world and call it "the world," which is why "just see it differently" is so hard. The first freedom is simply noticing the glasses are on: "this feeling of attack is my filter, not a fact about this person." The episode also explains why a scent can drop you straight into childhood: the past is stored not by date but as a pattern, and a present cue that matches it reassembles the whole world at once, soaked in the old feeling. Recognising it as a reassembly, "I am here now, not back there," loosens its grip. Most hopefully, this conditioning is not fate. Like channels carved by a river, the flow runs where it has run before, but the bed is not concrete. It re-carves through catching the filter in the act, repeating a new response until a new channel deepens, and a non-grabbing watchfulness that lets the old channel silt up. Everyone carries a different filter; none is a verdict, and all are teachable.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:•  Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mind•  Advanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mindAlso available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
