Facing Lucius Balefire with a hostage and a swarm of mosquitos, the coterie had to act quickly. Everett wanted to talk, but Val immediately flung Pentecost’s body at Margery to get her clear, and Margery did not survive. Doris successfully stabbed Lucius with the Shaft, but he grabbed her and took off with her upward into the sky. On the ground, Evangeline tried to reason with the swarm but instead they turned on Val, who quickly fell into torpor.
