3/7/24 - Part 5 - SCCRTC Board Meeting - Aptos Bridge Survey Results Presentation

from Santa Cruz County Transit and Transportation Agency Meetings - Audio Tracks

(Summary from the RTC's Highlights)The Commission received an informational update on the community’s preference betweentwo single-span bridge types for the Coastal Rail Trail Segment 12 bicycle and pedestrianbridge over Aptos Creek and Soquel Drive. The project originally proposed a three-spansimple prefabricated bridge. However, the project development team encounteredchallenges with utilities conflicting with the location of the bridge columns andrecommended a single span, 300-foot- long bridge. Two single-span bridge options wereconsidered. The Tied Arch Bridge would be supported by two 300-foot-long curved archeswith the deck supported below. Its 50-foot-tall arch makes a striking visual statement andwould be visible from adjacent public and private properties. The Stress Ribbon Bridgewould be supported by suspension cables within the concrete deck. Its low profile andminimalist design would offer a harmonious blend with the environment and would be lessof a visual statement than the Tied Arch type. In January 2024, the RTC released a shortvideo and online survey to solicit input on the community’s bridge preference. The onlinesurvey had 889 respondents and the results were in favor of the Tied Arch bridge type. TheProject Development Team is moving forward with the Tied Arch Bridge
