3.8 Two Modes of Knowing: Mind as Bridge Between Domains

from The Mind in the Light of Modern and Spiritual Sciences · host Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre

This is the last lesson of the long middle module, the summit the whole climb has been heading toward. Across seven lessons the group has taken the mind apart and watched it work. Today they ask the simplest and largest question of all: what does it actually mean to know something? The answer has two forms. One kind of knowing keeps a gap between you and the world, the knower here, the known over there, and it is the engine of ordinary life. The other kind closes that gap, and the world stops being something you stand outside of. The mind, it turns out, is the bridge between them. An ancient line puts it in six words: the mind alone is the cause of both bondage and freedom.Difference-based knowing keeps a gap between knower and known, with the familiar flicker or "beat" between them; it runs all of practical life and is indispensable. Unity-based knowing is when your inner rhythm comes into tune with what you know, the gap closes, and there is only the thing itself, whole, like the concert-goer who disappears into the music. The mind is neutral; the path is not to destroy it but to retune it. It stands like a bridge between the everyday world of time, space and cause, where reality looks like separate parts, and the whole, timeless reality we always are. Crossing happens as the beat narrows: effortful holding, then smooth flow "like oil from a jug," then the gap simply gone. The slipping and returning of early practice is the bridge being built, not failure.A beautiful image from the Yoga Sūtra: the still mind does not switch off, it goes transparent, like a clear crystal that glows red beside a red flower and blue beside a blue cloth, taking the form of whatever rests beside it with no tint of its own. With the module's fog removed, the mind is not empty but perfectly clear, and it recognises its own nature in what it meets: the wave realising it was always the ocean, waving. The bridge appears in real suffering too. Anxiety is the gap held wide and fast; depression and rumination are the beat heavy and stuck; trauma strains the bridge itself and needs safety rebuilt slowly with skilled, trauma-informed support alongside contemplative methods. Across all three, the instrument making the symptom is the one that carries the recovery. The episode closes on what only a conscious being can do: today's machines excel at difference-based knowing at superhuman scale, but unity-based knowing needs a knower that recognises itself in what is known. As machines take over more of the first kind, the second, direct recognition, creativity from stillness, compassion rooted in shared being, becomes the distinctly human work.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:•  Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mind•  Advanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mindAlso available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
