In this chilling tale Clarence, the half-brother of a wife of an American couple,  is a hypnotist and psychiatric doctor living in India and when he hears of the existence of his niece he returns to the states and moves into his half-sister's home against the objections of her husband.  He is able to assert mental control over his sister and things get very scary from that point on.
