3. UNSOLVED: The Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders at Camp Scott (1977)

from Darkly Speaking · host Alex Kern

June 13, 1977 — the first night of summer camp at Camp Scott in Mayes County, Oklahoma should have been filled with campfire songs and laughter. Instead, the bodies of three young Girl Scouts — Lori Farmer, Michelle Guse, and Denise Milner — were discovered near their tent. The shocking crime set off one of the largest manhunts in Oklahoma history, leading to the arrest of fugitive Gene Leroy Hart. But despite national attention and a highly publicized trial, Hart was acquitted — and the murders remain officially unsolved nearly 50 years later. In this episode, we revisit the events of that night, the investigation that followed, and the lingering questions surrounding one of America’s most haunting cold cases. TW: This episode includes discussion of crimes against children and sexual violence, and potentially distressing circumstances. Listener discretion is advised.
