He was the founder of logotherapy, which is a form of existential analysis. Frankl’s best-selling book called, Man's Search for Meaning, chronicles his experiences as a concentration camp inmate, which led him to discover the importance of finding meaning in all forms of existence, even the most brutal ones, and thus, a reason to continue living. Thank G-d, we do not have to find meaning in any such brutal suffering as Frankl had experienced and witnessed others experience. Nevertheless, our generation has an unprecedented rise in the amount of people that suffer with a depression disorder. We today understand far better that much depression and other mental disorders are an outcome of childhood trauma called ACE’s Adverse Childhood Experiences. I am attaching a Link from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) and a Link to clip on ACE’s, and from there you can go on to do more research. One important ACE to consider is the childhood trauma of Abonnement, which does not necessary mean that a parent physically walked out on their child, but rather, that a parent was emotionally unavailable to their child. Emotional Neglect is a primary ACE. There are amazing, albeit horrific, studies done on an infant’s reaction to when their mother simply shows them a blank face, without a facial expression of love and communication. As the recipient of ACE’s, and I would argue that presently we are all people with ACE’s, we must each find meaning to our lives. Thus, this lecture will explore precisely what is the meaning to life, and any form of suffering in life. This lecture is based upon a maamor delivered by the Rebbe in 1965, exploring the power of prayers.
