30. GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE (2022) dir. Sophie Hyde

from The Movies · host Daniel Berrios

I recorded this less than five minutes after learning the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. What follows are the earliest thoughts, blended in with the themes I admire from Sophie Hyde's new comedy, "Good Luck to You, Leo Grande." The plot follows Nancy (Emma Thompson), a recently widowed and retired schoolteacher who books sex worker Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) for a session. Through her interactions with Leo, Nancy explores her sexual repression, shame, self-judgment and mental roadblocks regarding having a satisfying sexual experience. I can't help but think the psychology behind how we approach, discuss and respond to our sexual expression serves as a good starting point to how we then regard our bodily autonomy and reproductive rights. All of this from a straight cis man. Christ. Sorry for when I (inevitably) fuck this up, but this podcast is partially a diary for me, so here we go.---Follow The Movies on Instagram & LetterboxdFinancially support the podcast via the tip jar!
