30 - Phil Volker - Parts 1 & 2 (of 3 part series) - "Camino, Cancer, Catholicism, & Corn"
from The Camino Cafe · host Leigh Brennan
Send us Fan MailI was honored to have the opportunity to interview Phil Volker during the recent Caminohead get-together at his home on Vashon Island, Washington. Phil walked over 500 miles on a Camino path he built in his own backyard while receiving treatments for Stage 4 Cancer. Filmmaker, Annie O'Neil, introduced most of us to Phil in the beautiful film she made about his journey, "Phil's Camino: So Far So Good". Phil is no longer taking treatments and he is currently on hospice care. As always, Phil is not letting this stop him from continuing to share his life's lessons nor tending the corn in his garden. Phil has much left to say and I think many folks will find his words here so inspiring. In this interview, Phil and I chat about the Camino he built after the cancer diagnosis in 2009, his spiritual journey to Catholicism, how he and his wife Rebecca met, being a Marine Veteran where he served as a Rifle Range Coach, the difference between curing and healing, how the Camino epicenter is within the people that have walked it, and how the 4C's, "Camino, Cancer, Catholicism, & Corn", have transformed him and his life. I hope you enjoy our conversation. Buen Camino!
