30. Voting Rights: Susan B. Anthony & Fannie Lou Hamer

from Pink Collar: A True Crime Podcast · host Pink Collar Pod

It’s been a tense past couple of days in our country. For that reason, we decided to focus on cases surrounding voting rights. Rachel starts off with the arrest of the famous women’s rights activist, Susan B. Anthony. Susan was arrested in upstate New York after casting her ballot in a New York election. She believed the recently passed Fourteenth Amendment granted all citizens the right to vote, including women. Other people disagreed and Susan and her lawyers headed to trial. Nathalie then tells the story of Fannie Lou Hamer, a women’s rights activist and leader in the civil rights movement. Fannie stood resilient in her fight for voter’s rights despite being extorted, harassed, shot at, and assaulted while trying to register to vote and cast her ballot. She lead the way for thousands of black citizens in Mississippi to become registered voters.
