30 Years a Ghost: The Truth Behind a Father's Disappearance

from Unspoken Emotions · host Rachel Elimelech

In this poignant episode, Rachel explores the deeply personal story of Lisa Alexander, whose father, a large-scale drug trafficker known as Whitey, disappeared for 30 years. Lisa grew up believing her father was dead, only to discover decades later that he was alive and had been living under an assumed identity.  KEY TAKEAWAYS The Impact of Ambiguous Loss: Growing up with a missing parent creates a profound sense of uncertainty that can be more challenging to navigate than a clear death. Identity and Resilience: Lisa’s story highlights how a traumatic childhood can shape one’s identity and the immense strength required to build a positive life despite such a background. The Complexity of Reconnection: Finding a long-lost parent, especially under dramatic circumstances, brings a whirlwind of conflicting emotions, from shock and joy to anger and resentment. Choosing Peace Over Bitterness: Despite the trauma and betrayal, Lisa emphasizes the importance of choosing forgiveness and moving forward rather than being consumed by bitterness. The Power of Truth: Discovering the truth about her father’s life, including his work for the FBI, provided Lisa with a necessary, though complex, sense of closure. BEST MOMENTS "My dad was justhe was justhe went by 'Whitey' in Winnipeg. And he was just larger than life, and he did everything his own way." "I thought he'd forgotten about me. And he did show up that night. I remember I was in bed already, and he brought me a doll." "God, I love you. And that little girl got what she was looking for her whole life." "I’d rather be better than bitter, you know." "You’ve got to keep on moving on." Empowered by Darkness Andrea Medina Hi, I’m Andrea Medina. Though I’m in my early 20s, the history of relational trauma in my family lineage coupled with my own father’s abuse and abandonment, has instilled in me a self-awareness and sensitivity to emotions from a young age. I was born in México and raised in Compton, a community where I didn’t have many mentors or influences that pointed me in the direction of emotional healing work. Still, I went on to publish The Energized Self: A Journey to Interconnected Healing, a book that is half memoir and half conversations with trauma survivors at the age of 22. This same year I began my public speaking journey and my master’s program to become a Marriage and Family Therapist. As I find myself rising to fulfill my soul’s calling today, I am still in the same location where conversations like the ones had in this podcast aren’t common. I’m also faced with a myriad of economic and social challenges that I know listeners will relate to. My goal is that Never Alone Infertility Morgan and Madison Never Alone is a podcast for women navigating infertility, loss, and everything in between. We’re two friends whose paths intertwined during our own walks through infertility, and we understand how isolating and overwhelming the process can be. From the uncertainty of IVF to the heartache of miscarriage and the patience required in moments of waiting, we’re here for you.Join us each week as we have real and raw conversations about the challenges and emotions of walking through infertility and loss – both from our own experiences and speaking with other women. We’re glad you’re here, and hope you feel seen, supported and most of all know that you’re never alone.
