The Woman in White 9 Hartright went to consult Mrs. Clements. Madame Fosco hoaxed Clements into taking a trip to London to stay according to Madame F. During the trip, Madame Fosco disappeared and returned to Clements & Anne's apartment and took Anne away. Clements said Mrs. Catherick worked for Glyde for years. After Catherick was pregnant, she went to Mr. Catherick to marry him. Two months after Mr. and Mrs. Catherick's marriage, Anne was born. Mr. Catherick suspected Anne was Glyde's child. Anne didn't look like Glyde nor like Mrs. Catherick. Mrs. Catherick hated the girl from the first moment. Hartright visited Mrs. Catherick to find she is rude and uneducated. Upon mentioning the "vestry of the church", Mrs. Cathrick asked Hartright to leave immediately. Hartright resolved to visit the church to find the marrige register. Glyde stole the key to the vestry from the clerk. Glyde's lamp tipped over while searching for documents inside the vestry.
