31. The Criminalization of Indigenous Resistance with Warren Bernauer

from Total Liberation · host Mexie & Marine

Rundown In this episode, Mexie interviews Dr. Warren Bernauer about the relationship between what John Bellamy Foster terms ‘ecological imperialism’ and the criminalization of Indigenous resistance to extractive capital. We discuss Warren’s co-authored article called “From Wallmapu to Nunatsiavut: The Criminalization of Indigenous Resistance” (listed below) which highlights the cases of two Indigenous women jailed for defending their communities: Francisca Linconao in Chile and Beatrice Hunter in Canada. Warren explains the relationship between ecological imperialism and our colonial-capitalist economic system, and points to Canada’s use of unnecessary violent force at Unistoten Camp as a present day example of how criminalization is used to secure colonial-capitalist relations. We end by discussing how settlers can be allies and support land defenders across the Americas. Sources and Links * Warren Bernauer, Henry Heller, and Peter Kulchyski, 2018.
