32. Personality Changes, Meanness, and Aggression in Early-Onset Dementia: How Not to Take It Personally (The Caregiver Anger Series, Part 3)
from Living With EOD | Early-Onset Dementia, Caregiver Overwhelm, Abandonment, Respite Care · host Tonya Lynn Derrick | Biblical Mindset and Purpose Coach
One of the most painful parts of early-onset dementia is not memory loss it is personality change. When the person you love begins to say hurtful things, act out of character, show anger, paranoia, or a lack of empathy, it can feel heartbreaking and deeply personal. But in many cases, these personality and behavior changes are not intentional. They are caused by physical changes and damage in the brain. Understanding what is happening medically can help caregivers respond with wisdom instead of anger and protect their hearts in the process. In this episode, we talk about what is happening in the brain in early-onset dementia, how medications may help manage symptoms (but why there is currently no cure), how to handle hurtful words and aggression, and how to apply biblical wisdom when the person you love is slowly changing. This is Part 3 of The Caregiver Anger Series. What You Will Learn in This Episode What is physically happening in the brain in early-onset dementia Why personality changes, meanness, and aggression happen The role of the frontal lobe in behavior, empathy, and judgment How medications may help symptoms but are not a cure How to separate the disease from the person How to respond to hurtful behavior without taking it personally How to guard your heart emotionally and spiritually Biblical Truths Discussed in This Episode Luke 23:34 — “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Ecclesiastes 3:4 — “There is a time to weep and a time to mourn…” Proverbs 15:1 — “A gentle answer turns away wrath…” Proverbs 4:23 — “Above all else, guard your heart…” James 1:19 — “Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” 1 Corinthians 13:7 — “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” A Key Reminder From This Episode In dementia caregiving, we are called to love a person who is slowly changing, and sometimes that love looks less like romance and more like sacrifice, patience, and endurance. This is not the marriage we expected, but it is the calling we are walking. Practical Steps Discussed Do not argue or try to reason during emotional or aggressive moments Lower your voice and remain calm Redirect instead of correcting Step away if behavior escalates Make the home environment safe if aggression is increasing Speak with your doctor about behavior changes and medication options Pray before responding instead of reacting Remind yourself: “This is the disease, not the person.” This Episode Is Part of a Series The Caregiver Anger Series Part 1 — Caregiver Overwhelm and Anger: How to Respond Without Guilt Part 2 — Why Repetition in Dementia Creates Caregiver Anger Part 3 — Personality Changes, Meanness, and Aggression Part 4 — The Anger of Role Change in Marriage Part 5 — Burnout, Exhaustion, and Respite Part 6 — Resentment, Isolation, and Lack of Help Resources and Next Steps If you are a wife caring for a husband with early-onset dementia and you are feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone.
