32. THE RIGHTEOUS (2022) dir. Mark O'Brien
from The Movies · host Daniel Berrios
The Righteous is a religious psychological thriller about a priest (Henry Czerny) who, after suffering an exorbitant loss, finds himself praying for God to punish him for his sins. Around this time, he welcomes an injured stranger (Mark O'Brien) into his home. The man knows little to nothing about how he was hurt or even why he was out by the priest's house in the first place. However, it doesn't take long for the priest to realize the two men's meeting isn't as random (nor benign) as first believed. The movie's a meditation on the darkest parts of the soul, the home for the thoughts and actions we claim to want uncovered, yet at the same time, bury or lock away from anyone who dares try and hold us accountable. Sprinkle in some supernatural elements on an otherwise grounded story and the result is a tasty, if sometimes bitter, genre stew.---Follow The Movies on Instagram & LetterboxdFinancially support the podcast via the tip jar!
