Tales of the Greek Heroes 1 Roger Lancelyn Green (1918-1987) Romans used different names for the Greek gods. Zeus - Jupiter - the king of the gods Hera - Juno - the goddess of women and marriage Aphrodite - Venus - the goddess of love Hades - Pluto - the god of dead people Poseidon - Neptune - the god of the sea Persephone - the goddess of dead people Hermes - Mercury - the messenger of the gods Dionysus - Bacchus - the god of wine Apollo - the god of light and music Pan - the god of shepherds and their sheep Apollo and his sister Artemis were born on a hilltop on Delos island. Odysseus sailed out to attack city of Troy from Ithaca island. Titan Cronos begot Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades and Poseidon. Cronos's father--the sky--told Cronos he would be imprisoned by one of his sons. Cronos decided to eat every one of them. Cronos's wife Rhea hid Zeus away in a cave on the island of Crete. Rhea cheated Cronos with a rock saying it's Zeus. Zeus grew to 18 to came back and poisoned Cronos in his drink. All his children that were eaten alive came out of his mouth. The rock that was passed on as Zeus was also out and is at Delphi now. With the help of Cyclopes, Zeus won the war with Titans and imprisoned them in Tartarus, an area under earth. Zeus built palaces on Mount Olympus. One of the Titans locked in Tartarus was Iapetus. Iapetus had 3 sons. Prometheus helped mankind by stealing the fire from Zeus' palace. Epimetheus was the second son. Atlas was the third son who fought Zeus and failed. Zeus made him stand on top of Mount Atlas in the north of Africa and hold up the sky on his shoulders forever. -- Hosting provided by SoundOn
