33 - Evil Exes, Assemble!

from Cinema Scum · host Cinema Scum Podcast

This week, Anna and Oli talk Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010). Scott Pilgrim is a underachieving, mid-twenties loser living in Toronto and trying to make it with his garage-rock band when he meets and instantly falls in love with an endearing new girl in town, Ramona Flowers. Scott quickly learns however that in order to date Ramona, he will need to defeat the Legion of Evil Exes: a group of Ramona's ex-partners who, united in heartbreak, vowed to never let anyone else get dumped by Ramona. What ensues is a series of epic CGI boss-battles in which Scott must seek to understand her exes' backstories and perspectives in order to defeat them, and in doing so gains a better understanding of Ramona's perspective with regards to relationships and the difficulties in loving and trusting others. It has one of the best casts (Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman) and is perhaps the best comic book adaptation to film!
