Tales of Great Heroes 11 King Pelius of Iolcus had a beautiful daughter Alcestis. Prince Admetus was the most brave and the most handsome among the many suitors. Before Admetus departed to ask for Alcestis's hand, a strange farmer came to Admetus's kingdom to do the farming without getting any pay. After the 1-year tenant, Admetus went up hill to look for the stranger farmer. Admetus saw that all the animals came round the stranger farmer to hear him play his pipes. Stranger said he is Apollo, who was punished by Zeus to be a slave for a human for one year. Now that Apollo had finished his duty, he would gladly reward Admetus for his kindness and honesty. Admetus wished for Apollo to assist him winning over Alcestis's heart. Apollo granted and advised Admetus to go to Thebes to find Hercules first. Apollo then granted Admetus a second wish to come true. Admetus didn't have to die when his death came. Admetus's death did come much earlier than was expected. Admetus's parents wouldn't give up their lives for their son. Alcestis came up and said she would give herself to death. Alcestis died when Hercules reached Admetus's palace. Admetus welcomed Hercules warmly despite his grief at wife's death. Hercules was well fed and well drunk. Hercules heard of the death of his master's wife. Hercules went forth to find Death and duel with Him. Hercules was the first man who fought Death and won. Death gave back Alcestis to Hercules. Hercules led Alcestis back to Admetus and the two lived a second life. Hercules carried on with his northern task. Hercules broke King Diomedes's 4 man-eating horses. Diomedes went after Hercules less Hercules steal his own horses. Hercules grabbed Diomedes and threw him to the four horses. Diomedes was eaten by his own horses. Hercules brought the 4 horses back to coward king Eurystheus. Eurystheus set him off again to the last task: the belt of Hippolita, Queen of Amazons. Amazons were a nation of female who could fight well with their weapons. They didn't allow man in their country. They kept their husband outside of their country.
