Tales of Great Heroes 15 Jason's father was the King of Iolcus but defeated by brother Pelias. Pelias had been told that one day a man with only one shoe would come to Iolcus and kill him. Jason grew up in a cave taken care of by centaur Chiron. On his way to River Anaurus Jason met an old woman who asked Jason to carry her across the river. One of Jason's shoes came off in the mud at the bottom of the river. When he put down the old woman, Jason found she was the goddess Hera. Hera bade Jason to speak the words she put into his mouth. Jason arrived at Pelias's palace. Pelias was so afraid when he saw the Jason was wearing only one shoe. Pelias welcomed Jason nevertheless and said if he brought the Golden Fleece from Colchis, he could become King. A skilled ship builder Argus and Athena helped Jason build a big ship which they called Argo. Jason sent out messages for young kings and princes to join him in the quest for Golden Fleece. People who sailed on the Argo were called the Argonauts. Argo departed and reached land of King Cyzicus who treated them well. After they departed again into the sea there was a big storm which turned Argo around. Argo reached a port in the dark and people thought they were pirates and attacked. Jason fought bravely and killed everyone of them including the king. Then Jason found out the kind was actually King Cyzicus. Jason sailed and reached Mysia. Hylas went to fetch water but drowned. Hercules went to search Hylas when Argo was blown into the sea and Hercules was the only one left on land to travel to Colchis alone. Argo reached land of Thrace. King Phineus promised to help if only they drove the Harpies, cruel women with big wings, away. When two of Harpies came to steal food, two of Jason's men, the winged sons of the North Wind, flew up after them. The two Harpies never came back, nor were the two winged brothers. Passing safely through the Clashing Rocks, Argonauts came to River Phasis. Argo arrived at city of Colchis where Aeetes, son of Helios, was king. Aeetes promised to give them Golden Fleece, but first they had to take the bulls which breathed fire and ploughed a field with them then planted dragon's teeth in the field. Aeetes's daughter, Medea, came to Jason. Medea gave Jason a liquid to put on his body so that for just one day, he could not be hurt. Jason took the bulls and ploughed the field. Jason planted dragons' teeth and they grew quickly into an army. Jason threw the empty pot at the army who started fighting with each other and soon they all died. Aeetes planned to murder Jason but Medea came to Jason and took him and Orpheus to magic garden where the Golden Fleece hung on the tree which was also guarded by a dragon. Medea bade Orpheus to play his harp and sing. Even the dragon fell to a sweet sleep. Medea kept talking to Jason lest he fall asleep too. The minute the dragon fell asleep, Jason climbed up the tall tree to fetch the Golden Fleece. Medea took her brother Absyrtus with her to go onboard Argo. By then the dragon awoke. Argo sailed fast. King Aeetes planned to catch Argo. Medea killed brother Absyrtus then cut his body into small pieces and threw into sea for Aeetes to stop and gather the body. -- Hosting provided by SoundOn
