We see how they are opposed at every turn by the mighty phoenix king Caledor the First and ultimately the very mages who created the Great Vortex. The resulting sundering destroys 20% of Ulthuan and gives birth to the Dark Elves. Malekith’s evil machinations continue with the instigation of the War of the Beard resulting in both the death of Caledor the Second but also the loss of the Phoenix crown.
