"Finding inspiration is a job." - Davide Morosinotto  Davide Morosinotto visited Belgium and The Netherlands for 3 days, and we were a few of the lucky ones who got the opportunity to talk to him about his newest book ‘The legendary treasure of Hell Gate’ and of course also about ‘The greatest’: a favourite in our class!Davide told us that he divides research in two fields: fiction and non-fiction. We talk about relationships with his book characters, about how many pages the book will have that he is working on right now (800!) and we talk about telling the truth in children’s books.What is the misconception about his work here in The Netherlands? I noticed similarities between characters in The Lost Flower of the Shaman of K and Red Stars; the most obvious one is the name Viktor. Is it the same person?“Yes, it is. The pocket watch gang, Red stars and The lost flower of the shaman of K are all connected. Several characters are in these three books… but you must find them.”If you could make a podcast with a character from one of your books, who would it be and why? “I would make a podcast with Shi-Yu. She’s energetic and has strong opinions.” Do your characters ever surprise you and refuse to do what you planned?“My characters always do what they want. I don’t plan my stories, and they do what they like. That’s why I love my job.”You write stories that have a bit of scare too, how do you balance it, so it’s not too scary for children?“I don’t balance. I try to trust the story and my characters. That’s it.”What criteria are important to you to decide what part of history you want to write a book about?“No criteria. I find a story and if it’s somewhere in history, I follow it. For example: I found the story of the greatest pirate, she was Chinese in 1780. My story will be there.”If you could travel anywhere in time for your next story, where would you go?“My next book (2028 or 2029) will be in Alaska during the golden rush. So I want to go there!
